Welcome and Merry Christmas sweet friends! Even for the creative at heart decorating your mantel for Christmas can be a daunting task. I am sharing some helpful tips to help you create a Christmas mantel garland.
One of my favorite projects for Christmas is decorating our mantel. It gives such a warm and cozy feeling during the winter evenings. The garland I am creating today is going to be in a neutral palette.
How to make a Christmas Garland for fireplace
To start here are some of the items you will need:
- A mantel ;0)
- Faux garland ~ basic and inexpensive
- Twinkle lights (2-3 strands)
- A second garland ~ that will be an accent to your basic garland
- Ladder
- Extension cord
- Wire
- Scissors
- A third garland ~ something frosted or iced to add a bit of sparkle.
- Pinecones, berries, ribbons, & glass balls.
- A decorative focal item to go above the mantel (wreath, scroll, artwork or sign)

Let’s get started. Here is a view of my mantel all ready to begin the decorating festivities.
Tip 1 | LAYER CHRISTMAS GARLAND
I used this very basic and inexpensive garland to start. Choose a garland to fit the size of your mantel. You may need to wire two garlands together if they are too short. I like to add extra inches for weaving the garlands together and extra for the sides.

Once the basic garland is secure, I can now add my second garland. This will be a fancier garland.
This garland also tends to be more expensive. You can look for this garland
Now, weave the two together. Add wire if needed to keep them secured.
Let’s get crazy! I am adding a third garland to my Christmas mantel. Yes! A third… you don’t need a lot. It adds so much texture and fullness.
My design assistant Esther has come to help me decorate! :0)
My third garland is a frosted garland. You could use anything that adds to your design. Berries, pinecones, iced garland… the sky is the limit. The key is you want to layer three different types of garland to give you a full and beautiful effect.
Try adding something with a bit of sparkle! It will look so beautiful at night with the twinkle lights!
TIP 3 | CHRISTMAS MANTEL LIGHTS
Now we are ready to add the lights! There are so many different types of lights available now that can add to your design. Head on over to Lowes or Home Depot and get what you think will add the most to your decor. Here I have just inexpensive lights.
You can add as many strands as your heart desires! I like to add some behind too. That way whatever I place on the mantel will light up!
Voila!! We have lights!!
TIP 4 | MANTEL FOCAL POINT
Now for the pièce de résistance !! The focal point of my Christmas mantel garland…
I adore this scroll from Bea at Zo & Jordan. I cannot tell you how many compliments I get on this scroll. It is absolutely breathtaking and unique! I hung it from my antique windows for a beautiful layering effect.
TIP 5 | CHRISTMAS MANTEL DECORATIONS
For the final touches. I add a couple of real poinsettias in white from my local nursery. Dried hydrangeas that I cut from the yard during the fall. They add beautiful texture and fullness. My favorite Nativity is a special touch to help me remember the reason for this season.
You could add glass balls, ornaments, ribbon, pinecones, berries. whatever your heart desires!
Conclusion
Creating a Christmas mantel garland can be intimidating. But once you realize how fast and easy it can be you will have your mantel decorated in no time. I hope these tips help you decorate your mantel this Christmas season.
