Welcome sweet friends and Merry Christmas. Nothing says “Welcome” more than a festive entryway. I adore creating a warm and inviting entryway for my family and friends! As my guests walk up to the door, I want them to feel cherished.
I am sharing how I decorate my entryway for Christmas. Every year I put up wreaths, decorate my urns, and hang up garland to create a festive feel.
Here is my entryway all ready to start decorating!
Decorating Entryway for Christmas:
For this project you will need:
- Urn or planters
- Dirt or sand
- Dogwood branches ~ Proven Winners Arctic Fire®, Arctic Sun® Dogwood (Cornus)
- Arborvitae ~ Proven Winners Color Choice® North Pole® and Polar Gold® Arborvitae (Thuja)
- Lights (I used 8 sets)
- Wreath Hangers
- Wreaths
- Battery Operated lights for wreaths
- Garland (I used two ~ cedar and white pine)
- Ribbon for bows
- Wire
- Scissors/wire cutters
- Ladder
Let’s get started. First, I hang my evergreen wreaths on our front doors. I purchase live wreaths from local nursery every Christmas. They will last until Spring. Giving a beautiful burst of green to my entryway.
Christmas Urns
Every year I fill 6 urns of staggering heights with festive decorations. Inside each urn, I leave the potting soil from the fall to be used as an anchor for the stems. Once it freezes outside, they will be securely set in their winter homes. If you have dumped your potting soil, you can add sand to your urns. Remember to cover the drainage holes with leaves or a few woodchips. Or your sand will drain out like sand in an hourglass!
Arctic Sun Dogwood & Arctic Fire Dogwood
For this project, I am using Proven Winners Arctic Fire®, Arctic Sun® Dogwood (Cornus), Proven Winners Color Choice® North Pole® and Polar Gold® Arborvitae (Thuja) stems cut from the garden. I adore the contrast between the two Dogwood varieties. I am placing the Dogwood branches in each urn. Staggering the colors from the different bushes.
When planting in the spring and summer, keep your winter garden in mind. Planting these bushes will provide gorgeous winter color in your garden. These bushes will also provide you with beautiful cuttings you can use to create your festive Christmas urns each year. Purchasing these branches each season can be costly. So growing your own is a wonderful
Now for lights to add a bit of twinkle and festive glow to each urn.
I placed a string of lights in the center of each urn.
North Pole Arborvitae & Polar Gold Arborvitae
Finally, I filled in the outside edges of each urn with Proven Winners Color Choice® North Pole® and Polar Gold® Arborvitae (Thuja). The arborvitae softens the edges of each urn and adds a beautiful splash of green against the red.
All this hard work calls for a popcorn break! My design assistants ~ require a popcorn break with each project!
Who doesn’t love popcorn! Ellie, Emma Esther would tell you it is their favorite!
Now, finish filling in all the dogwood and arborvitae branches in each urn.
I think the urns look pretty amazing! I love how festive the dogwood looks against the arborvitae.
Garland Around Front Door
To frame in the entryway, I used two fresh garlands I purchased at our local nursery. Hanging garland can be tricky. I have found the best way to do this is to use nails or screws. Here in the midwest, we have winter storms with high winds. The garland has to secure or it will tear down.
Here I have used a masonry bit to drill a screw into the mortar of the stonework. Then I was able to wrap a

To give the garland
Now, for the lights on the garland. I used two strands to add a bit of twinkle.
I am adding battery operated lights for the wreaths.
It is so warm and inviting at night. I love how the garland frames in the doors.
The final touches I add red bows to each of the wreaths.
Things are coming together…

This is so beautiful and helpful! My husband and I put trees in our urns last night and were wondering how to anchor them! Your front porch entryway is always one of my FAVES!!

Hello Sweet Heather!
Thank you dear Heather for your love and support!! I did that a few years ago and they blew over my new cement pots!! 🙈 We had metal stakes that we wired the trees too. Add as much weight to the bottom as you can… dirt, stones and sand. I cannot wait to see how they look!!!!!!
Sending you all my love,
